No amount of source code will change that, especially if it doesn’t include later XP releases. Included in this torrent is the alleged source code for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, as well as an assortment of even older versions of the operating system. While WannaCry exploited Windows XP flaws, the campaign succeeded in part due to poor security policies.

This won’t necessarily lead to security issues on par with the WannaCry ransomware attack. Experts talking to ZDNet believed the new leaks came from academia, which has long had access to Windows source code to help bolster its security. One version of the code leak also includes code for MS DOS, Windows CE, Windows Embedded and Windows NT, although those aren’t believed to be new leaks. We’ve asked Microsoft for comment, although it already said it was “investigating the matter.” The Verge claimed the code was legitimate, with Ronin Dey and others also supporting those beliefs (via Windows Central). This seems to have been a placeholder for developing the theme engine and clearly never shipped, but it does highlight the fierce rivalry between Apple and Microsoft at a time when the tech industry was still computer-centric. The source code for Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2003 has allegedly leaked online, alongside snippets of code for other outdated Microsoft platforms like MS-DOS and. The Verge noted that the code includes multiple unreleased themes from XP’s early development (when it was nicknamed Whistler), including a theme that conspicuously imitates parts of Apple’s Aqua design language from OS X (now macOS). The files were circulating privately for years, according to the leaker, but are only becoming publicly available now - and they include some early work on Windows XP. Bleeping Computer and ZDNet report that a 4chan user has posted what’s believed to be source code for Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003. For now, however, all the files are still there available for download for anyone, and it’s hard to believe that Microsoft can do anything about it, especially as the number of mirrors is likely to grow as more people get it too.Microsoft is no stranger to Windows source code leaks, but a new incident might just provide insights into its history. The source code, on the other hand, can provide us with more information on how Microsoft built Windows XP and features that never made it to the market. Meanwhile, only a small number of devices are still running Windows XP, and most of them are government computers that have already been secured with other methods, including limited Internet access.

Needless to say, the operating system of choice for Microsoft is Windows 10, although a device running Windows XP would obviously need a series of hardware upgrades too in order to run this latest release.
#Windows xp source code upgrade
Windows XP no longer receives updates since April 2014, and Microsoft recommends everyone to upgrade to supported Windows.

While the leak isn’t necessarily something that Microsoft should be concerned about given these are all old products, what the company should try to figure out is how exactly the files made their way from company servers to torrent trackers.

The 43GB archive that leaked to the web earlier this week, however, included not only the Windows XP source code, but also similar data for other Microsoft products, including Windows 2000, Windows Embedded CE and 7, Windows Server 2003, and MS-DOS 6.0. While no other specifics were provided, Microsoft just said in a statement for Thurrott that it’s investigating, and it’s of course unknown if the company would ever return with more information on the matter. The Windows XP source code leaked as part of a massive archive earlier this week, and now Microsoft says it’s looking into the whole thing internally.
